17 Week Bumpdate

It all started to sink in this week. That there’s an actual human being in my uterus. I mean, I’m almost halfway through this pregnancy. It should have all sunk in by now. But nope. It kinda just hit me.

How far along: 17 weeks 6 days

Baby is the size of: an onion

Total weight gain: no idea at this point.

  • Still have a low tolerance gag reflex. I was walking to the office and a man passed me who was clearing his throat and sinuses like he was about to spit a loogie. I had to walk over to the curb and do a bit of dry heaving before I could continue. Jeez.
  • A weird metallic taste in my mouth that’s actually been there for awhile. I just kept forgetting to post about it. It’s gross and makes me want o chew gum or eat breath mints all day.
  • Some pulls and tugs in the abdomen  that I assume are ligaments stretching.
  • I have felt what could possibly be the baby moving a couple times. One time it felt a bit like a bubble popping in my lower abdomen. Another time it was big and felt like my stomach completely rolled over. Two very different feelings. Both of which very likely could have been gas.
  • Gas. Thankfully it seems to be escaping mostly through burping. I burp a lot. Keeping it classy, of course, by covering my mouth and being quiet about it.
  • Heartburn. Oh the heartburn. I have a deep love for Mexican food and indian food. Not great things to eat if your food keeps coming back up your esophagus. But I just can’t help myself. I take a couple tums every day. This is ok, right? I know I can’t take more than 6 in a 24 hour period, but is it ok if I’m taking fewer, but taking them pretty much everyday??

Food cravings: nothing new really. I’ve had Indian food a couple times this week and it was as amazing as I thought it would be. I’m wanting hearty cold-weather food like my veggie chili. This could likely not be pregnancy-related and just be a reflection of the cold weather we’ve been having.

Things making me queasy:  guys passing me on the street while clearing their throat and sinuses. See symptom #1

Maternity clothes: not yet. Though the bump is definitely showing in my regular clothes. I’m guessing I still have a few weeks before I start wearing maternity stuff.

Sleep: propping a pillow behind my back now to keep me on my side when I sleep. Turning to the other side is getting annoying. Mostly because unusually squished between S, a pillow and our 2 cats. I must be throwing off some major body heat these days because both cats curl up right next to me every night. I swear one of them intentionally slides his paws under my back to warm them up.

Purchases for baby: nothing. Should be closing on the house next week, so spending has been halted.

Purchases for mama: nope. See above.

Best moment this week: we spent all day Saturday packing and came across the mix CDs we gave out as favors at our wedding. Listening to it made us both super sappy all day.

Miss anything? not really

Looking forward to: closing on the house, no work from Dec 24 – Jan 3, moving the week of Dec 28, our anatomy scan Dec 29. A lot is happening in the next two weeks.

The Bump:

I think I look obviously pregnant now, but that might be wishful thinking. What you don’t see in this photo is the curve of my back, which is already starting to sway out.

16 Week Bumpdate

Funny story from this week. I accidentally ingested a cocktail.

S and I met a friend at a local tiki bar. S went up to the bar to order our drinks while our friend K and I hung out at the table. I told S I wanted a virgin frou frou drink, like a piña colada or something. She walked back with our drinks and put what looked like a smoothie in front of me and told me this was the virgin one. Her and K had cocktails over ice. I sucked that bad boy down and it was delicious. Like a mango/coconut milkshake. Later S went up to the bar to order her and K another round – the same drinks they ordered before. She walked back to the table with a stricken look on her face – carrying one drink with ice and another smoothie drink. During the first round, she had accidentally given me K’s drink – which had rum in it – and had given K the virgin drink! She was so upset and worried about it, thinking it would harm the baby. I tried to assure her that one drink was not going to damage the baby. I didn’t even taste any alcohol in it, so it had to have been pretty weak. S was so worried though, poor thing.

I don’t know if it was just the power of suggestion or my body going “nope. I dont think so.” but about 20 minutes later I wasn’t feeling very well. I went to the bar’s restroom and proceeded to vomit most of that cocktail up.

One drink isn’t going to do any harm, right??

16 Week Bumpdate

How far along? 16 weeks 6 days

Baby is the size of: an avocado. About 4.5″ long and roughly 3.5 oz.

Total Weight Gain:  according to my last appointment total weight gain is 3 lbs. the bump is poppin this week though so I imagined I’ve gained a bit since then.

  • Nausea is still sticking around. Now when I cough it seems to trigger my gag reflex, which makes my coughs sound way worse than they are. Also, it makes coughing in public a little scary. I actually did puke one morning this week from coughing. Innocent cough right before I got in the shower, then I suddenly felt it happening and just barely made it to the toilet. Oh lord.
  • Dryness! I’ve always had oily skin and hair. After reading a few bloggers who saw their oil production kick it up a notch during pregnancy, I was all prepared for that. Instead, my hair is super dry and frizzy and I’m slathering thick lotion on twice a day. What the what?
  • Shortness of breath. I have to walk up a pretty steep hill from the bus stop to our apartment. Earlier this week, I got home and was so out of breath from it! I sounded like I had just run a marathon or something. Even S was like, “are you ok?”

Food Cravings:  still fruit, especially apple slices with peanut butter. Hot chocolate, which is odd because I’ve never been a big fan before. Sautéed kale. Haven’t quenched my Indian food craving yet. Wasabi peas.

Things that make me queasy:  still coffee and eggs. Tonight our downstairs neighbors were cooking some salty strong smelling dish that was making me queasy. I had to shut all our windows to keep the smell out.

Maternity Clothes: nothing new. Still wearing my normal clothes. Maternity clothes are neatly packed in my dresser waiting for their turn.

Sleep: starting to be uncomfortable lying on my back. It doesn’t hurt, but my abdomen just feels really heavy and uncomfortable. I spend most of the night on my side, but wake up on my back every once in awhile.

Purchases for baby:  nothing this week

Purchases for mama:  nothing this week. We’re about to close on the house so all spending has been halted.

Best moment this week:  we had our company holiday party Wednesday and it was so great to just relax and hang out with my colleagues. Lots of laughter and delicious Mexican food. At one point I was standing in line at the buffet and a colleague shouted out “I can see it!” while pointing to my belly. The bump is starting to pop.

Miss anything? Not really

Looking forward to: getting the exact closing date on the new house. I just want to skip the whole moving part and jump to being settled in the house. Our anatomy scan on Dec 29th!

The Bump: This was the first week where I could see the bump while wearing clothes. Still kind of looks like a food baby, but hopefully will round out a bit more in the coming weeks.

Thanksgiving hangover

We’ve been back from our Thanksgiving trip to TX for 5 days now, but I still feel a bit hungover from it. I don’t know of it was the consumption of food I don’t normally eat or the flying or what. But I’m ready for a relaxing weekend. Hahah! Did I mention that we’re in contract for our first home?! Things are definitely not relaxing right now.

We fell in love with this home and put it an offer 3 weeks ago. We were told we were their second choice, but they went with a higher offer. We moved on. Cut to the Friday before Thanksgiving when we find out the first buyers pulled out. The house was ours if we wanted it. And we do! Since then it’s just been a frenzy of paperwork and stressing about moving the week after Christmas. So yeah, no Christmas decor this year, sadly. We went to Home Depot last night and bought our first washer and dryer set – to be delivered to the new home Jan. 2nd. We walked out of there laughing and thinking, “who the hell are we now? Are we actually adults?”

So while I’ll try to find some downtime this weekend, we also have to start the packing bonanza soon.

On to the fun baby stuff:

15 Week Bumpdate

How far along? 15 weeks 6 days

Baby is the size of:  an orange

Total weight gain: just had an appt. today and I’ve gained 3 lbs since my last appt. But since I lost 2 lbs during the first trimester, I’m only 1 lb over my pre-pregnancy weight. The doctor didn’t seem worried about me not gaining more, so I won’t either.

  • Thought I was done with puking but it has reared its ugly head twice this week. Once immediately after flying and once after drinking orange juice first thing in the morning. No more acidic drinks on an empty stomach.
  • Still feel light headed when standing on the crowded commuter train
  • Had my first nosebleed the other day. At least I was home when it happened.

Food cravings: still crazy about fruit – right now I’m all about kiwi – eating 2 or 3 a day. Wanting Indian food real bad, but S isn’t a big fan of it so I’m gonna have to buy it during lunch one day. Ice cream. Peanut butter. Seaweed salad – I could eat buckets of seaweed salad.

Things that make me queasy: Our open plan office has a distinct burnt coffee smell in the mornings that is driving me and my stomach crazy. I can’t even walk into the kitchen area sometimes.

Maternity clothes: went shopping with my mom and got some stuff. Since she might not see me again until the baby is here, I can understand why she wanted to shop for clothes, even though my bump is not at all big enough for them yet. I got some soft leggings, a pair of maternity jeans, and a few cute tops from Motherhood Maternity. I realized I wear a lot of black and grey.

Sleep: crazy dreams. One this week involved me getting chased down a street by some dude and then stabbed repeatedly in my throat. What the fuck?!? Other than that, I’m sleeping like a rock.

Purchases for baby: we bought some cute little Oxford shoes. We have a cute idea for a pregnancy announcement on Facebook and will use them for that.

Purchases for mama: nothing beyond the maternity clothes above

Best moment of the week: seeing family at Thanksgiving. Talking all things baby with mom. Realizing we’re buying our first home this month. Telling my team at work that I’m pregnant. So much laughter and happiness 🙂 Hearing Gummy Bear’s heart beat at my appt today. S/he was moving around a lot and the doctor had to chase her around my belly for a while. These last 2 weeks have been pretty exciting.

Miss anything? not really

Looking forward to:  our 20 week ultrasound on Dec 29th! Moving into our home that same week. Feeling this baby move around. I know it can happen pretty much at any time now, so I’m just waiting and trying to be patient.

The Bump: it’s growing and its hard. It used to just stick out a bit under my belly button, but now my entire abdomen from ribcage to pelvic bone seems to be thicker. My regular jeans are starting to get uncomfortable. It definitely shows a bit under my shirts, but it doesn’t look like a bump yet. I just look like I had a big burrito for lunch or something.

I will leave you with this photo of my cat B. Still following me around everywhere. Still insisting on sitting in my lap anytime I’m on the couch. I’m worried about how he’ll handle sharing me with a baby…..
