She’s here!

I can’t believe it’s already Thursday! Our Gummy Bear arrived Tuesday, May 24th at 12:44am, weighing 7 lbs 3 oz and measuring 21 inches long. Monday was a crazy day that involved laboring at home all day and then also having to rush our 15 year old cat to the animal hospital, which is where we were when my contractions started going from 10 minutes apart and easy to just breathe through to 5 min apart and hard to talk through. Cat is fine! And I’ll type up the whole crazy birth story soon to share.

But for now, we’re all home and settling into the new normal, sore nips and all.

Arriving at our maternity triage room before we were officially admitted.

Introducing Mabel!

Mabel is a breast feeding champ so far with a very healthy set of lungs.

39 week bumpdate

Here we are! Due date is tomorrow!

I’ve wrapped up most of my work to-do list. Just have to pass along some instructions tomorrow and then I’m good to go. It feels weird to email vendors and inform them that I’ll be out of the office until late August. It’s been really nice to work from how this week. I’ve been taking a lunchtime walk around the neighborhood, trying to work this baby lower into my pelvis. Bouncing on the birth ball while typing up work emails. Making nice dinners and not being exhausted from my commute. It’s been lovely.

I’m officially on leave starting Monday!  Just using PTO I’ve saved up until the kiddo arrives and my maternity leave kicks in. No work emails, no meetings, just relaxing at home. It almost makes me hope the baby arrives a week late, so I can get in a few days of doing absolutely nothing. Almost.

How far along: 39 weeks, 6 days

Baby is the size of: a watermelon! Our friend K is a midwife for the hospital where we’re giving birth. When we went over to her and her wife’s house this past weekend for dinner, she felt around my belly and predicts a 7.5 lb baby.

Total weight gain: since I lost 2 lbs in the last two weeks, my totally weight gain is down to 22.5lbs.

  • Peeing a lot
  • Lots of lightening bolts in the hooha
  • Achy back
  • Bad heartburn as soon as I bend over or lie down
  • Soft cervix, according to Dr S
  • Almost 1 cm dilated, no effacement yet
  • Baby’s head is at -2 station

Food cravings: eating a lot of ice cream and popcicles. My appetite has been ravenous lately so I’ve been making some nice dinners for us lately. I can tell the baby has moved down some this past week because I can eat a bit more than usual before feeling full. Stomach is obviously less squished!

Things that make me queasy: heartburn!

Maternity clothes: it’s been hot here, so I’ve been wearing lots of skirts and tank tops

Sleep: getting to sleep in a bit this week, due to no commute, has really helped. I feel much more refreshed lately

Purchases for baby: nothing this week

Purchases for mama: nothing this week

Best moment this week: this past weekend, we celebrated S’s birthday. We had dinner out with friends Friday night at a great restaurant, hosted some of S’s family Saturday, and spent Sunday evening with other friends. Very social weekend and a lot of fun!

Miss anything: having energy. And as much as I’m gonna miss my bump when it’s gone, I miss not having to haul this thing around.

Loking forward to: her arrival! Haven’t felt anything resembling labor so far. Hoping she kicks it into gear soon. If she’s still inside on Tuesday morning, I have an appt with Dr S to check my cervix again and have a non stress test to check on the kiddo. I’m gonna ask for a membrane sweep at that point.

Also, I have an acupuncture appt tomorrow and I’m hoping that helps get the ball rolling.

We’ve got the freezer, fridge and pantry stocked. We’ve got the basics like toilet paper, paper towels and other necessities stocked. The baby’s room is finished. The bassinet is set up. The hospital bags are packed. Car seat is installed in the car. We’re ready to go!

The Bump:

Let’s get this show on the road, shall we?

Went to my 39 week prenatal appt today. Though according to Dr. S, my due date is today. During the 13 week ultrasound, Gummy Bear was measuring 3 days ahead, so they bumped her due date up 3 days. I find this really odd, since we know exactly which day she was conceived. If you go by the date of the IUI, this Friday, the 20th, is her due date. But Dr. S says that I’m 40 weeks today. Whatever. I’m still saying the 20th.

Anyway, the appointment went well. I’ve actually LOST 2 lbs in the last two weeks, which I found alarming. But Dr. S said its normal for your body to start purging water weight before you go into labor. I am peeing a lot more these days.

There was some disappointment when she did the cervical check. I’m almost 1 cm dilated, but my cervix hasn’t thinned at all. It’s very soft apparently and ready to go, but hasn’t budged much yet. And the baby’s head is still at -2 station. With all the pressure I’ve been feeling, I was sure she was fully engaged. But alas, not yet. The station level points out how far down she is in my pelvis. She’s fully engaged when her head is at 0 station, in line with my ischial spines (the narrowest part of my pelvis). Anything above that is a minus station and anything below that is a positive station. So she’s only 2 cm from being fully engaged. But still. She is apparently real comfy and in no hurry to exit.

So what now? I’m working from home now, which means long walks around the neighborhood at lunchtime. Lots of bouncing on the birth ball. My heartburn doesn’t allow me to eat spicy foods right now. My chest hurts just thinking about that.

I know she’ll get here when she’s ready. I’m lucky in that, besides just being tired and uncomfortable hauling this belly around, I don’t have any complications or real pain.  S and I are just trying to enjoy the last days of it being the two of us. And trying to not be impatient

38 week bumpdate

A little late this week, but oh well. My last big event at work is tonight. I’m not going, just the thought of managing a huge event until 1am makes me exhausted. But I was still the lead on all the planning and logistics up until this morning. I am a bit of a control freak, so it was tough to walk away yesterday and leave it in the hands of my maternity leave replacement. I was at the office until 8pm last night making sure everything was ready to go. Now I’m at home, in my robe, and trying to not email my colleagues a million reminders about their event duties tonight. I need to take a step back and trust that everything will run smoothly tonight.

I’m working from home from now until my due date! So nice to not have to trudge through my commute, although my round trip commute involved 30-40 minutes of walking, which is the only exercise I’ve really been doing. I need to make sure I still get some walking in each day.

How far along? Today I am 39 weeks, 0 days

Baby is the size of: a winter melon? Not sure what that is.

Total weight gain: 24.5+. I don’t see my OB until this next Tuesday, so that weight gain is a week and a half old. My appetite has returned with a vengeance, so I’m sure it’s about 26+ at this point

  • Lots of Braxton Hicks. Or just contractions, who knows. Nothing that feels like real labor, but just lots of tightening and some cramping along the bottom and front of my belly.
  • Trouble breathing still. It’s hard to take a deep breath and I feel like my breathing sounds a bit labored. Just getting dressed in the morning makes me all out of breath!
  • She’s definitely a bit lower now. I waddle more and am getting lots of lightening bolts in my hooha when I walk.
  • Congested. Not sure if this is pregnancy related or allergies, but not being able to breath out of my nose for a lot of the time really doesn’t help with the whole “having trouble breathing” symptom above
  • Some sciatica nerve pain? I’ve never had that before, but sometimes when I’m walking, one side of my butt will get a zing of pain that lasts a few minutes. Is that what that is?

Food cravings: I feel like I’m back in the first trimester. While I have much more of an appetite now than I did in the first 3 months, I’m craving all those first trimester foods – mashed potatoes, bland pasta, plain hot brothy noodles, toast. It’s like my body is carbo-loading before delivery or something.

Things that make me queasy: my heartburn makes me queasy at night. My gag reflex seems to have lowered even more lately and just brushing my teeth can make me come close to vomiting

Maternity clothes: yep. And I’m having to wear all the longer shirts, as the shorter tops don’t cover all of the bump anymore.

Sleep: ok. Waking up to pee a couple times a night, plus lately I’ve been stressed about work. But now that the last big event is tonight, hopefully the stress goes away.

Purchases for baby: nothing this week

Purchases for mama: nothing this week

Best moment this week: we had our late Babymoon in the redwoods this past weekend. So needed that! Cutest little cabin with no wifi and no tv. So it was 3 days of relaxing, reading, taking pretty walks, cooking good food, playing board games and snuggling in front of a fire. We decided we have to make sure we get away with for a weekend each year – just the two of us. Drop the kid off at a grandparent’s and go have some adult time for a few days.

Miss anything: my energy. Would also love a nice cold cocktail these days.

Looking forward to: our Gummy Bear’s arrival! Being able to relax and work a much lighter workload from home next week. Today is S’s birthday, so we’re going out for a nice meal tonight and having her family over for a barbeque tomorrow.

The Bump: she still looks high to me, but all the pressure in my pelvis is telling me otherwise. I think she’s just taking up ALL the room in my abdomen. All of it.

37 Week Bumpdate

Whoa, it feels weird to say 37 weeks! Although I’m starting to be uncomfortable a lot of the time now, I’m still not ready to say good-bye to pregnancy. I’ve really enjoyed this ride and know I’ll be sad when it’s over, even though we’ll have this adorable baby to snuggle! We put off having a kid for such a long time (but I don’t regret that at all!) and I’ve been trying to just soak it all in. We’re still undecided about if we’ll have a second one. And if we do have another, which method we’ll use (biological with a donor, fostering, and adoption are all on the table). So this may be the only time I’m pregnant and I want to enjoy it fully!

How far along: 37 weeks, 6 days

Baby is the size of: a head of romaine lettuce (?)

Total weight gain: 24.5 lbs! Had my OB appt this past Tuesday morning

  • Apparently she has dropped! The doctor commented on how low she was compared to my last appt. She didn’t do an internal check, just felt and measured her from the outside
  • Some pelvic pressure when I walk now and lightening bolt type pains in my hooha. They usually go away when I put my feet up
  • Peeing more often. And when I have to go, I HAVE to go. Stat.
  • Lots of grunting and sighing involved when I move from a sitting to a standing position
  • I’m not sure if they’re Braxton Hicks or just regular contractions, but I’ve had them most days this week. Totally random, not with any regularity at all. Maybe once or twice a day. It’s pretty painful and feels like a cramp that covers the whole bottom of my belly.
  • She’s running out of room in there which means we can pretty confidently pick out body parts now when we feel around my belly. It’s common to see a limb slide across my bump at night when I’m lying down.
  • My hands are started to swell slightly. Nothing major, but my wedding ring is a little tight these days.

Food cravings: my appetite has returned after a slight hiatus. I still don’t feel like I have much room for food, but I’m feeling famished just about every hour. Will take a couple bites and then feel uncomfortably full. Devouring oatmeal and ice cream (not together) a lot these days. Also really thirsty. Gatorade and iced tea sound good all the time.

Things that make me queasy: at night my heartburn is at its worst and makes me queasy

Maternity clothes: nothing but maternity. Really wanting to just wear large tent-like clothes these days.

Sleep: actually a little better this week. Maybe I’m just getting used to tossing and turning all night?

Purchases for baby: nothing this week.

Purchases for mama: my prenatal massage had to be rescheduled as my masseuse was sick this week. So now it’s this next Tuesday. Hopefully it sticks this time, since we’re nearing the end.

Best moment this week: we had a scare and made a trip to L&D. That in itself wasn’t the best moment, that was a little scary, but getting to hear her heartbeat for 30 minutes and seeing her briefly on the ultrasound (and learning that everything was ok) was definitely a high point this week.

Miss anything: it’s Cinco de Mayo and I would love to have a margarita today

Looking forward to: our getaway this weekend! Ready to hang out in a hammock for a few days. Still haven’t packed our hospital bags, but need to do that tonight so we can take them with us on the trip tomorrow.

The Bump: my poor belly tattoo is so stretched now. Hoping it looks ok after the baby’s out. A tattoo artist told me that as long as I don’t get stretch marks going through it, it should go back to normal. No stretch marks YET. Fingers crossed!

A milestone…?

First trip to emergency Labor and Delivery? Check.

Everything was normal all day yesterday. Gummy Bear was doing her typical aerobics routine throughout the day. I worked from home, so it was a pretty relaxed day of sitting on my couch and typing away at my laptop. It wasn’t until about 9pm that we became a little concerned.

We were sitting on the couch watching TV after dinner. Soph had her hand on my belly feeling the baby move around. Suddenly, a portion of my belly started moving up and down rhythmically, almost like a really fast heartbeat. It’s right around where her booty is situated, so we had no idea what was causing it to move like that. It didn’t feel like kicking and it continued for about 2-3 minutes. We were both a little freaked out by it and  S thought she might be struggling, so we went to L&D to check it out.

Everyone was so nice there. We were placed in a private triage room within a couple minutes of arriving. No one made us feel dumb for coming in to check on the baby. No first-time parent overreaction shaming, thank goodness. They hooked me up to some monitors, one for baby’s heartbeat, another for checking to see if I was having contractions, and we got to listen to her heartbeat for about 30 minutes. It seemed totally normal. The doctor on call came in  and did a quick ultrasound. The baby is head down and in place and the amniotic levels look good. She said Gummy Bear looks beautiful, I wasn’t having contractions, and they could send me home. We were in and out in an hour. She couldn’t explain what the rhythmic motion was, but just said sometimes a baby’s muscles will spasm or they’ll move in weird ways, but they didn’t see anything worrying. She also said we can come in anytime we’re concerned about anything and not to worry about over reacting.

So not a bad experience, besides the worrying beforehand. Gummy Bear is still moving around like normal. On the way home I said to the baby, “Don’t scare your moms like that anymore.” S responded with “oh, this was just the first of many, I’m sure!” Sigh.
